Direct answer: Rakes are an Endless Mode event after Story completion. Shoot them before they reach the playable area; an official update added a second gun so players are not forced to wait on one weapon.
When Rakes appear
The official release material says completing the 13-night Story Mode unlocks Endless Mode. The later Rakes balance post places this event in that post-story mode, so a player still progressing through the main story should not use it as a normal Night 1–13 customer rule.
Official response rule
The developer’s update gives a direct instruction: Rakes must be shot before they reach the playable area. That makes the event a time-sensitive ranged response rather than an identity-check decision.
Why there are two guns
The same official update says a second gun was added because players previously had to wait for a single weapon to respawn. In co-op, spread players across the available firing response instead of having everyone depend on one pickup.
What changed in the balance update
The update removed the patience mechanic from Rakes and adjusted their presentation. Old videos or guides that describe waiting on patience may therefore reflect an earlier version of the encounter.
