Solo, intended group and maximum lobby

How Many Players Can Play?

Shift At Midnight supports solo play, was designed around three players and now has a selectable six-player maximum after an official update.

Lobby size

The short answer: 1, 3 or 6

All three numbers are correct in different contexts. The important distinction is design target versus selectable cap.

1

Solo

The game supports solo play.

Use this when you want the standard investigation loop without a co-op lobby.

3

Designed group size

The store listing and launch material describe play with up to two friends.

This is the group size the developers say the game was designed around.

6

Selectable cap

An official post-launch update added a selectable maximum of six players.

The same update warns that six-player mode is more chaotic and less tightly balanced.

Direct answer: You can play Shift At Midnight solo. The original store and launch materials support up to three players, while a later official update added a selectable maximum of six.

Why players see both “3” and “6”

The figures describe different things. Three is the original listed group size and the design target stated by the developer. Six is a later selectable cap. The official update warns that the game was not originally designed for six, so a full lobby should be expected to feel more chaotic and less tightly balanced.

Does the player cap change crossplay?

No. Lobby size and storefront compatibility are separate rules. Even if a lobby has open slots, a Steam copy cannot join the Xbox and PC Game Pass pool under the current official platform policy. Use the crossplay matrix for the exact store combination.

Encounter balance in larger lobbies

The six-player update did more than raise the cap: it lowered Marionette health and made the Jack-in-the-Box music louder. Those changes show that some encounter tuning depends on the expanded lobby option.
